To reduce virus transfer the SA government ordered universal lockdown in March 2020. Police and military were instructed to see that the rules were followed. Almost immediately there complaints of abuse of power by both. The SA Human Rights Commission set u national monitoring teams to observe and report on what was happening.
The Peace Centre provided teams for both Khayelitsha and Mitchells Plain with funding support from SA Quakers Peace & Justice Development Fund,
At the end of 2020 lockdown and monitoring both continue with a constant flow of reports of violence involving police, community demonstrators and city council officials.
